Punctuation Use
In "The Yellow Wallpaper" there is a non-conventional use of punctuation throughout the entire story. The use of punctuation marks emphasize how brief the narrator had to be when she was writing as John forbid it (Golden 1). This is one of the reasons that there is exclamation points in places that normally would not have one. It demonstrates that the woman had to make her point quickly or she would have been caught by her husband or sister-in-law. An example of this would be when the narrator writes, "I wonder--I begin to think--I wish John would take me away from here!" (Stetson 652). The narrator finishes with an exclamation point for two reasons: she wants to emphasize her despise for the place she is living in and that she had to hide her journal as someone was about to enter the room.
